Foundation Launches Project to Build Lake Pavilion
The Lake Monticello Community Foundation announced plans to finance and build a family pavilion at the Lake. The plan was approved by the LMOA board at its meeting Aug. 22.
The open-air, covered pavilion could be used for such things as free family movie nights, family picnics and reunions, by swim teams and kid camps, for weddings, for free band concerts and many other things, according to officials from the LMOA board and the Foundation.
“When we informally surveyed the community, this pavilion was clearly the most popular among the ideas that were practical for the Foundation to carry out,” said Alan Stewart, president of the Lake Monticello Community Foundation. “This will be built at absolutely no cost to LMOA. But we are working closely with LMOA on the design and features of the pavilion, which we want to be pleasant to look at while also being highly useful to everyone at the Lake.”
The LMOA board officially approved the location of the pavilion, which had earlier been approved by the Foundation board. The approximately 30- by 40-foot pavilion will be built on the open ground between the Ashlawn Clubhouse and the pool.
“We worked closely with LMOA officials to select the best site,” Stewart said. “After a series of meetings between the Foundation and LMOA, and consultations with those likely to use it or be affected by it, we decided this is best for several reasons, including reasonable parking, easy access to Ashlawn and bathrooms, easy access to the pool, and land that is not currently slated for any use.”
“Thank you, Lake Monticello Community Foundation,” said LMOA President Larry Henson after the LMOA board vote. “This is a very nice gift. It will be great.” LMOA Vice President Gary Sellick called the Foundation gift “a great thing.”
The design of the pavilion isn’t final, and all design decisions will be mutually approved by LMOA and the Foundation. The general plan is for a wooden structure with an attractive roof line, sitting on a concrete slab. It would have an electrical system able to support a band performance and LED lighting.
LMOA will set the rules for usage of the pavilion.
The Foundation is estimating a cost of less than $100,000 to build the pavilion, and said it already has about a third of that in hand. The rest will be raised through its various fundraising activities, such as a golf tournament, Talent Showcase, Festival of Trees and “Pay What You Want” yard sale, as well as by donations from generous residents. (Donations can be made at www.lakemonticellocommunityfoundation.org/donate.)
“We’re fairly confident we can raise the money to build the pavilion by next summer, and it should take only weeks to finish,” Stewart said. ”The Lake Monticello Community Foundation believes this new pavilion will be another spectacular gift that we – through the community’s participation and contributions – can make to the whole community.”
Approaching its fourth birthday, the Lake Monticello Community Foundation, a 501©3 charitable organization completely independent from LMOA, has financed and completed the All-Inclusive Playground, paid for kayak launch ramps, given college scholarships, made large donations to a half dozen community service organizations throughout Fluvanna, provided free pool passes to the needy, and organized community events.
Talent Showcase Big Success
Great talent. Great crowd. Great dancing. Great fun at the Community Talent Showcase put on April 27 by the Lake Monticello Community Foundation. And a great start toward fundraising for our next big project. Stay tuned!
More than 4,000 pounds of residents’ potentially sensitive documents were shredded at the third annual Shred Day organized by the Lake Monticello Community Foundation. Those having documents shredded donated more than $2.000 to the Foundation, leaving a net of more than $1,400 after paying for the truck that shredded the documents instantly onsite. The proceeds will be shared with Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire & Rescue, which provided the site.

Fluvanna Seniors Can Win Foundation Scholarship for Community Service
The Lake Monticello Community Foundation is offering its first annual Community Service Award $1,500 scholarship to Lake Monticello high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to community service. Applications are due by Feb. 28.
The Community Service Award scholarship can be won by any high school senior who lives in at the Lake and has completed at least 50 hours of community service in Fluvanna County.
“The Lake Monticello Community Foundation is looking for a student who engages in meaningful community service and volunteerism over an extended period of time (at least 50 to 200 hours),” said organizer and Foundation board member Scott Mein. “Meaningful is when students pick community service opportunities that are meaningful to them, reflect their passions, where they stay fully committed and can see how they are making a difference over time.”
Students don’t have to be going to college to qualify for the Foundation scholarship. "The money needs to be used for continuing your education, whether it is through a community college or university, trade school, armed forces, or specialized training like a police academy or fire and rescue,” Mein said.

Foundation Looking Ahead!
Following two successful holiday efforts – the Wreath contest and the Memory Tree - the Lake Monticello Community Foundation is looking forward in this new year to marking our first anniversary in March by proposing some exciting projects to benefit the greater Lake Monticello community.
One of the things we’re looking into is possibly making one of the LMOA playgrounds all inclusive. In a community like this, we think it’s important for at least one of the playgrounds to be accessible to all.
We’ve still got a way to go before launching this. We have started research to learn what needs to be done to make a playground accessible, and what is feasible.
We need to get approval from the LMOA board to take on the project, and on what its parameters will be. And, of course, we’ll have to work closely with the LMOA administration and staff.
We look forward in the coming weeks to completing an agreement with LMOA on how projects can be approved in the future – including utilization of Foundation funds and procedures for facilitating projects once they are approved.
We will work in collaboration with LMOA on this and any project that impacts the Lake Monticello facilities and public spaces. We are currently working diligently with LMOA management and Board of Directors to finalize an agreement that defines our collaborative efforts and allows us to smoothly move forward projects that benefit the Lake community.
And even though we’ve had some very generous donations recently and our bank balance is building, we’ll need to raise more money to carry out any large project.
The great news is that the Lake Monticello Community Foundation is now fully certified by both the federal and state governments as a charity, which means all contributions are tax deductible. Getting that 501(c)(3) tax exempt status was one of the main reasons for forming the Foundation, since previous fund-raising attempts by LMOA and others were hampered by not being tax deductible.
After all, the entire goal of the Lake Monticello Community Foundation is to help make the Lake a better place, taking on projects that LMOA hasn’t budgeted for or doesn’t have the staff to do. All we ask from LMOA is ideas for what we can do for the Lake Monticello community, and their help in getting approval for the projects.
We welcome your ideas on ways the Lake Monticello Community Foundation can help make our community better—bonus points if you want to volunteer to help accomplish any of these ideas or contribute money towards a project.
So, look forward to word soon, we hope, on launching our next big project. We can’t wait to get started!
